Rostec will Implement Artificial Intelligence in Aircraft Engine Manufacturing in Rybinsk

United Engine Corporation will implement artificial intelligence to detect the smallest defects on gas turbine engine blades. The robotic system will be commissioned at UEC-Saturn in Rybinsk. It will robotize the preliminary quality control of parts and double the control station capacity.

The solution includes a platform on the basis of Control Point artificial intelligence and two robotic control stations to feed blades where the blade surface is inspected by computer vision cameras and marked.

Using the computer vision, the platform will produce and process images of small defects on polished blades that are difficult to see with the human eye. Artificial intelligence will identify defects by means of analysis of various types of images.

“Introduction of computer vision and artificial intelligence will allow the rate of defect detection on the gas turbine blade surface to be almost doubled. In addition, the company will be able to review and adjust production processes thanks to collected data. After start-up of the platform, the control station capacity will grow dramatically and will have a favorable effect on the achievement of the large-scale production program targets,” commented Evgeny Alekseev, Director of Digital Transformation of UEC-Saturn.
